Creative Ways to Celebrate Lent

As we approach the Lenten season, you will find many Christians asking one another, “What are you giving up for Lent?” Usually, I give up drinking sugary drinks or eating ice cream, but since I have changed my diet completely in the past seven months, I find that I need to find other ways to celebrate.

In case you didn’t know…

Lent (LatinQuadragesimaFortieth) is a solemn religious observance in the Christian liturgical calendar that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends approximately six weeks later, before Easter Sunday. The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer for Easter through prayer, doing penancerepentance of sins, almsgiving, and self-denial

  1. Volunteer! Spend time volunteering your time with your charitable organization
  2. Facebook – Social media, especially Facebook can be addictive. Giving up for Lent can provide some much-needed distance and help establish relationships with those around you.
  3. Television – Add your favorite shows to the DVR and turn the TV off.
  4. Apps / Phone Games – These days it seems that phone games are more addictive than TV! Getting your nose out of your phone can help to see what’s right in front of you.
  5. Eating out at restaurants – Save a few bucks and crack open your refrigerator!
  6. Coffee – Take a break from Starbucks and drink water instead.
  7. Reading books than the Bible – The parables in the Bible can be as interesting as some of the other national bestsellers. Crack it open and take a peek.
  8. Chocolate – I swear that chocolate can add pounds just by smelling it.
  9. Twitter – Ban political chatter for 40 days!
  10. Pizza – I love pizza so giving up this one will hurt.
  11. Internet Shopping – Don’t worry, there will be deals just for you when you return after 40 days!
